UPDATE (Added March 28, 2021)
Because so many have only recently watched this video many are asking for an update.

Shortly after this I posted this video Jeff Durban responded with a three hour video in which he:
1. Admitted to recording the phone conversation without my knowledge
2. Admitted to creating an anonymous youtube account and posting the conversation.
3. Admitted he records private conversations with his church members, attenders and local pastors without their knowledge.
4. Claimed I was a super bad christian.
5. Put his narcissistic cult like leader personality on full display.

Hosts Tim and Len are a couple of regular guys who started their ministries on YouTube making videos defending the faith and dismantling the arguments of atheism, skepticism, cults and radical unbelief. The Bible Thumping Wingnut Podcast started April 1st of 2014 to encourage Christians to engage in apologetics, evangelism and polemics, and to equip them with the tools and resources to do so to the Glory of God.
  1. […] the Bible Thumping Wingnut site covered one of the frequent criticisms of Durbin—that he secretly records private confessional meetings with members and later publicly […]

    Very Concerning.
The Bible is clear when a brother repents privately forgive him, end of story. You do not wait to see if the sin is repeated.
We are to reflect God in forgiveness. Perhaps God is waiting to see if Pastor Durbin’s repentance is real. How long do we wait?
This is nonsense you repented end of story. He forgave you or was that not real forgiveness. If you had fallen into the same sin again then that would be a different sin not the same one. This is exactly what Jesus was talking about when He said forgive 70 times 7.
A person may be truly repentant. Be of the mind I am not going to do that again yet fall into the same sin. Every moment I live every breath I take I do so breaking the first commandment. I will continue to do so this side of the grave. I am glad God is not waiting for me to demonstrate perfect sinless love to Him before He forgives me. Anyone who thinks they keep the first commandment for one minute does not understand the depravity of the heart.

My spirit has been vexed by many statements made by Jeff Durbin. I see him as a brother, but I can’t listen to him anymore (this has been long before listening to your experience, Tim). There’s something grating in his communication style and the tone he uses about secondary and tertiary doctrinal issues. I cannot wait for glory when our flesh no longer wars with our spirit and sins in spite of the grace that is found in the blood of the covenant.

I understand completely why you’re upset. I was considering going to that church, but now I think I’ll pass. What the pastor did was HIGHLY UNETHICAL. I’d never consider going in to that pastor for counselling – I don’t want my dirty laundry one day to end up on Facebook or YouTube for all to hear!!! I could never trust the elders, the pastor or the Apologia congregation after hearing this! Their behavior is just NOT CHRISTIAN!

You need to just wipe the dust off your feet, end your interaction with Apologia and never look back. Then turn the page.

I’m awfully late in coming to this conversation, but anyway, to state the obvious:

    Matthew 18:21-35

Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus *said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

23 “For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. 24 When he had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. 25 But since he did not have the means to repay, his lord commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made. 26 So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.’ 27 And the lord of that slave felt compassion and released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you.’ 30 But he was unwilling and went and threw him in prison until he should pay back what was owed. 31 So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their lord all that had happened. 32 Then summoning him, his lord said to him, ‘You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?’ 34 And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him. 35 My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart.”

I just stumbled upon this. I was a member at apologia church for two years. When I questioned where the money of tithing was going in the church, questioned the new Hawaii church plant jeff just decided he wanted one day, and other issues…I was bullied and slandered from the pulpit. Now keep in mind, NO ONE KNEW WHERE THE MONIES were being spent except the inner circle at apologia. Never were the meetings or notes in bulletin regarding this. It was a very clique centered church. You are not crazy. Yes, I learned a lot there. However, there is more going on there. Jeff is like a little God there. Bullying is very common with these men. I was a single woman at the time and my mother and I questioned things to the elders and jeff personally. God bless, and I pray that these men will repent of their pride and ego centric behaviors.

I’m not quite sure what’s all going on here. It sounds like both parties are in the wrong. 1st it was wrong for Jeff to record and then post what he did but for JD to talk the way he did, is just adding to it. It’s best to just let Tim explain the situation for himself. If you want to share what he has to say, then fine but speaking on his behalf, not so unless you have his blessing and you are just explaining the situation and not jabbing at anyone.

I just want to say that I appreciate what JD is trying to do in regards to polemics but sometimes he is just attacking fellow Christians. Dr. White does the same thing and it’s a shame. You can call others out when they do wrong without attacking them.

Aren’t you doing what you are claiming should not be done? You posted a text message to Hall from Durbin. Also, you might want to think about how you on this cast ,were thinking out loud ( at the very least ), were expressing how Apologia deals with those that are part of Apologia. That could be taken as a slanderous thing do to the fact that your expression ignored that Durbin gave a standard by which he is functioning. Specifically in this case that if sin is public then it will be exposed publicly.

Some food for thought and prayer.

May the Lord open eyes and hearts where need be, may God bless you.

Thanks Brothers. This was sharpening and a good teaching opportunity. It is sad to see this all, but God can use it to prepare those of us who have been struggling under errant teaching and cloudy perspectives to see the difference between what .purports to be truth and what actually is. Praise Jesus that you have been strong in these conflicts to build us up.

Sorry this happened. We are told in scripture to go to the person who offends us and if they repent forgive them. No one else is to be involved unless the reconciliation needs mediation. I think with Mr. Hurd’s permission it could have been released. I don’t personally know any of the people directly involved or their motives, but I think everyone should step back and do some introspection. I would not post a video criticizing someone I knew unless they were a heretic, apostate, and or and a spiritual threat to believers. Examples would include Josh Harris, Paula White, Beth Moore, Jen Wilkin, Hank Hanegraff, and the like. I really think you guys should stop doing those kinds of podcasts. It is embarrassing to the person. This was done to Sam Jones a couple of months back. I was listening to him regularly and found the podcast on him not accurate plus the goofy photo that wasn’t him. I think Jeff was embarrassed (I would have been) and maybe was retaliating. I listen to JD, Sam Jones, Brannon Howse, Ed Dingess, and you guys. I appreciate the straight talk and biblical perspectives. I have learned and been affirmed in some of my views from all of you. I don’t understand the need to publicly call each other out on podcasts or blogs. I am sincerely sorry Pastor Durbin did this and hope his church will hold him accountable.

Why would a PASTOR record a man confessing his sin and then post it on the internet for the whole world to see? This is outrageous. Why is he recording ppl in the first place? Its unethical and really shows immaturity on his part.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Because he records all his conversations.

what drama… ya know I was considering apologia church because in my church I just feel like we are just playing church and are full of special little exclusive cliques. . I want to know what Jesus wants me to do for him… I’m SICK of corporate church…..

        • Mitchell Bovard 2 years ago

I know that God does not want a lukewarm church.. it seems that whenever we go after Gods word and really walk the word there’s much infighting. I guess that’s just human

        • Mitchell Bovard 2 years ago

I’m looking for Christ. I’m looking all around and all I see is puffed up egos and my doctrine is better than yours and look at me look at me bs… I’m looking elsewhere for Christ I’ll be looking within. .
